Star India and Aamir Khan’s genre defining new show “Satyamev Jayate” embarks with a solid start

16 May 2012

Mumbai, 16th May 2012:The launch episode of the path-breaking Satyamev Jayate on Sunday, May 6th at 11 am, achieved the highest reach for any launch episode at 2.7 crore reach as per TAM panel (All 4+, All TV Homes C&S + Terrestrial).
This number extrapolated to the universe is about 9 crore* people making it the single highest reach for any launch episode in the last year.
Satyamev Jayate also marks the first time in the history of Indian television when a show was broadcast on a pan India platform and simulcast on all major channels of Star India Network - Star Plus, Star Pravah, Star Jalsha, Star World, Star Vijay, Asianet as well as ETV Telegu and Doordarshan. "The impact the show has already brought is unprecedented and historic and we are truly overwhelmed by the public support this highly emotive show has generated”, Uday Shankar, CEO of STAR India said.
Satyamev Jayate was the number 1 show on Indian Television last week with an All India Rating of 4.1 (All 4+, All India homes C&S + Terrestrial).
The show also successfully revived the Sunday morning TV slot that was once synonymous with shows of yore - The Ramayana and Mahabharata. In the decades since these two epic-based shows, the Sunday morning slot only garnered only half of the weekend prime TV ratings. The show has created more buzz than any other Television show in recent history. Satyamev Jayate was the most searched term in Google in India on May 6th - the show trended 1-9 on the top Twitter Trends and the sentiment was highly positive getting rave reviews across audiences. The Facebook page launched about a month back already has 7,90,000 fans with about half the fans talking about it. This is unheard of for any show to build this momentum within weeks of launch. The show opened with roughly 50% higher ratings in Upper SEC Audiences (SEC A 5.9 TVR All 4+), a number that only gets better as you look at Upper SEC data in C&S homes – 14.4 TVR in SEC 15-34 years, SEC A (Digital homes, HSM Million+). At the other end of the spectrum Terrestrial Homes gave thumbs up as well with DD ratings at 11 TVR (Non C&S Households). (* TAM reach extrapolated to All India (U+R) using IRS)

Race against time

Sanjay Gupta, chief operating officer (COO) of Star India said that October 2014 is a realistic deadline for BARC. But the issue of the guidelines was another problem altogether. “What an ideal measurement system ought to be – this subject has been in discussion in the country for more than three years. It began with the Amit Mitra committee report in 2010. To my mind, as a system and as an industry, we have chosen not to act on it. I do believe that the existing television system is not compreh
